When you have a beloved home library, filled with shelves upon shelves of books, the prospect of moving from one home to another can be worrisome. After all, you do not want anything to bad to happen to the contents of your library, especially if you have any rare books, first editions, or nice leather-bound copies of your favorite classics.
Moving does not have to be a frightening task, and you can get your home library transitioned to your new home safely and in the best possible shape. You just need to get to know some of the ways that you can do just that. Then, you can get your packing and your move started as soon as possible.
Do Not Use Large Boxes
Using large boxes can seem like an easy way to transport large numbers of books efficiently. However, there are many reasons that large boxes simply are not right for moving your books. First of all, filling large boxes full of books will make the boxes so heavy they are sure to get dropped or cause an injury in the moving process.
Secondly, large boxes are not good for your books. The weight of the books on top of your lower copies can cause damage to the bindings, and if you do not pack the boxes well, shifting of the books can also damage pages and covers.
Use many small boxes instead of a few large boxes. Small boxes are easier to pack well and can be lifted easily without jostling the books or worse yet, dropping the boxes.
Avoid Packing Books at an Angle
The fastest way to damage your books in a move is to allow any of your books to be leaning or otherwise packed at an angle. Packing your books at an angle can bend the pages and spines, leaving the books permanently curved.
Even if your move will be quick and the books will not be in boxes for very long, do not risk it. Instead pack your books flat in vertical piles. You can also pack them spine-down to protect the structural integrity of your books. Just make sure there is no room for them to shift or lean, whichever method you choose for packing.
Pack Paperbacks and Hardcovers Separately
Packing your books by size and style can also be a great way to prevent issues from occurring as you move. Placing paperback and hardcover books in separate boxes prevents hardcovers from damaging the paperbacks. It also helps you to be better organized when you unpack your books in your new home.
These tips will help you move your home library safely and successfully. And remember to get your residential moving company hired early so they can do all of the heavy book lifting for you on moving day.
